Field Trip to the Franklin Park Zoo!

We’re happy to announce the upcoming field trip to the Franklin Park Zoo.

Franklin Park Zoo is a 72-acre site nestled in Boston’s historic Franklin Park, long considered the “crown jewel” of Frederick Law Olmsted’s Emerald Necklace Park System. The Zoo was founded in 1912 and was managed by the City of Boston until 1958, when the Metropolitan District Commission (MDC), a state agency, assumed management. The MDC managed the Zoos until 1991, when Governor William Weld signed legislation to create the private Commonwealth Zoological Corporation (CZC). In July of 1997 the CZC changed its name to Zoo New England to reflect the changing image of the Zoos.

Zoo New England participates in Species Survival Plans (SSP) for several of our animals. SSPs began in 1981 as cooperative multi-institutional population management and conservation programs for selected species at North American zoos and aquariums SSP carefully manages the breeding of a species in order to maintain a genetically healthy, and demographically stable captive population. Institutions participating in an SSP share their collective knowledge to establish husbandry and reproductive guidelines that secure the survival of the captive population as a safeguard to possible species extinction.

If your child is interested in going, please be sure to submit their permission slip by 6pm on Monday April 29th.  If we don’t have enough people signed up by then, we will be forced to cancel the trip.  Copies of the permission slip can be found on the cubbies outside of the Main Room.
